MWEG on the Hill

On December 10, the day the House of Representative filed articles of impeachment against President Trump, MWEG members who live in the DC area hand-delivered dozens of letters written to 35 members of Congress by their MWEG constituents around the country.  MWEG members have also been busy expressing their opinions publicly in op-eds and letters to the editor.

The women of MWEG come from across the political spectrum and are united in their commitment to peacemaking and to boldly calling for elected leaders to govern with integrity. Here are excerpts of letters written by our some of our members to their members of Congress:

Allison (Utah)

“I am deeply concerned that republican leaders in the House are not taking the impeachment hearings seriously and basing their decisions only along party lines. I have read the minority report on the hearings and they are focusing on the fact that President Trump was duly elected. Bill Clinton was duly elected when he was impeached. The point is not that he was duly elected, the point is that he has violated the obligations of his office.

“The purpose for impeachment, as I understand it, is to provide a method for removal of a corrupt leader (even, or especially, when that leader was duly elected). As a member of your district, I implore you to have the integrity required to represent my interests in this impeachment inquiry. I believe in this impeachment inquiry and have serious doubts with President Trump’s conduct.”

Sarah (Nebraska)

“The purpose for impeachment, as I understand it, is to provide a method for removal of a corrupt leader (even, or especially, when that leader was duly elected). I implore you to look at the facts of the investigation honestly, listen to the voices and expertise of the witnesses with an open mind, and defend the American values of justice and democracy with your decision. When you were elected, you were tasked with representing the Americans living in your district and not party affiliation; keep the truth and our wellbeing in mind first and foremost.”

Jenny (New Mexico)

“I have been closely following the impeachment proceedings. The witness testimonies and the president’s own words and actions have led me to the conclusion that Pres. Trump needs to be impeached. This is not a decision I take lightly, nor do I receive any joy from it as I know it will cause further contention in our nation.

“I know this will be a tough decision for you as the majority of your constituents are Republican and support Pres. Trump. I urge you to put our nation and our beloved constitution first. We cannot have a president who feels as though he is above the law and acts like a king.

“I have always been a Republican and have always voted Republican, until this past election when I voted for you. Please know I will be praying for you, that you will be gifted with discernment to know truth from fiction.”

Leslie (Utah)

“For the last several weeks I have paid close attention to the impeachment inquiry hearings. The evidence presented before the House has been upsetting and clear. Donald Trump took an oath to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution. As I listened to ambassadors, foreign service representatives, and civil servants explain the events under investigation, it has become clear that the president has abdicated his responsibility.
“As a member of Congress, you also took an oath to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution. Impeachment is the process written into the Constitution to remove a corrupt leader. I implore you to give serious attention to the evidence of exploitation surrounding this president. Answer honestly – if similar evidence of corruption was revealed about a Democratic president, would you then support impeachment? Please, please set aside your political biases, and live up to your oath of office. Our Constitution and country are depending on all members of Congress to be principled, ethical, thoughtful, and to be loyal to our Constitution, not a political party or the president.”
